Class Specification: VETERAN INTERN, HEAVY MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONAL SUPPORT

DEFINITION:
Participates in structured assignments in preparation for successful progression into heavy maintenance and operational occupational fields.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
Positions allocable to this class typically report to an assigned supervisor and/or mentor and receive both technical job training and guidance on workplace behavior, competencies, individual responsibilities, and development of heavy maintenance and operational support skills.  Veteran Intern, Heavy Maintenance and Operational Support positions are assigned to assist journey or higher-level workers in either central or line departments by performing a wide variety of maintenance and repair work, grounds keeping work, and warehouse and storage tasks in order to enhance previous job skills or to gain new experience in the heavy maintenance and operational occupational areas. 

Positions receive formal and informal instruction on the principles that apply to the assigned work area to govern satisfactory performance of the job.  The internship program prepares veterans to compete for entry and journey-level jobs to continue public service in the area in which they have received training.  Typically, veterans participate in this program for 12 to 24 months based on individual training and experience requirements.  During the duration of the internship program, incumbents are expected to develop and demonstrate progressively increasing skills and to work with greater independence of action as they gain further experience and proficiency in their occupation for progression into permanent County positions.  Intern assignments may be made on any shift, including County departments that have 24-hour responsibilities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
These assignments may require incumbents to frequently lift objects over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working above ground on irregular surfaces. Some assignments may require a California Class A or B  Driver License.  Examples of the types of work to be performed include, but are not limited to, the following primary assignments:

Assists in the repair and maintenance of roads, flood control channels, sewers, easements, sidewalks, and other publicly maintained properties.

Assists skilled warehouse workers in handling materials and supplies, including loading and unloading materials.

Assists grounds maintenance personnel in the maintenance of County parks and the grounds of County buildings, hospitals, and other facilities.

May assist food service workers in the provision of scheduled meal service at County institutions including custody facilities.

May drive automotive equipment to and from work sites and may be trained in the safe operation of equipment and be assigned to operate power equipment.

May drive County-owned vehicles to pick-up and deliver supplies.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
No experience required; however, the veteran must have been discharged or released from active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States Armed Forces under honorable conditions.

LICENSE:
Some assignments may require a valid California Class C Driver License to perform job‑related essential duties, or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.  Some assignments may require a valid California Class A or B Driver License.

A valid DD214, Certificate of Discharge or Separation from Active Duty, is required. 

PHYSICAL CLASS:
2 - Light.

Veteran Interns who perform moderate or arduous physical tasks as described in the Examples of Duties will be required to pass a Class 3 - Moderate or Class 4 - Arduous physical examination.
