Class Specification: VETERAN INTERN, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT

DEFINITION:
Participates in structured assignments in preparation for successful progression into an information technology occupational field.

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
Positions allocable to this class typically report to an assigned supervisor and/or mentor and receive both technical job training and guidance on workplace behavior, competencies, individual responsibilities, and development of information technology occupational skill sets.  Veteran Intern, Information Technology Support positions are assigned to assist journey or higher-level information technology staff, in central or line departments, in analyzing, documenting, developing, coding, testing, configuring, installing, troubleshooting, and/or repairing software, hardware, and applications in order to enhance previous job skills or to gain new experience in the information technology occupational area.

Positions receive formal and informal instruction on the principles, design, components, functions, and techniques of a particular information technology support area to govern satisfactory performance of the job.  The internship program prepares veterans to compete for entry and journey-level jobs to continue public service in the area in which they received training.  Typically, veterans participate in this program for 12 to 24 months based on individual training and experience requirements.  During the duration of the internship program, incumbents are expected to develop and demonstrate progressively increasing skills and to work with greater independence of action as they further gain experience and proficiency in their occupation for progression into permanent County positions.  Intern assignments may be made on any shift in County departments having 24-hour responsibilities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Some assignments may require occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting and considerable walking.  Some assignments may require incumbents to stand or walk much of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.  Examples of the types of work to be performed include, but are not limited to, the following primary assignments:

Assists during all phases of system analysis of new application systems and/or existing systems.

Assists in interviewing end-users, performing workflow analysis, and defining project scope and objectives.

Assists in the installation, configuration, maintenance, and testing of computer hardware, software, and peripheral equipment, and of networks and servers.

Assists in coding, testing, and debugging application programs to create new or modify existing business applications and interfaces.

Attends training sessions and staff conferences.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
No experience required; however, the veteran must have been discharged or released from active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States Armed Forces under honorable conditions.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions. 

A valid DD214, Certificate of Discharge or Separation from Active Duty, is required. 

PHYSICAL CLASS:
2 - Light.

Veteran Interns who perform moderate physical tasks as described in the Examples of Duties will be required to pass a Class 3 - Moderate physical examination.
